The future's future. Seabird.

iPHONE 4? HTC DESIRE? NOKIA Nseries? BLACKBERRY? BLUEBERRY? SMARTPHONES? SMARTER SMARTPHONES? SMARTEST SMARTPHONES?

People nowadays are addicted (or should i say, obsessed?) with these smartphones. Having a smartphone has somehow become a cultural trend, or in short, those who have these kind of phones are said to be in a higher social class ( social status ) than those who dont. They are extremely proud to have one in their pocket or in their handbags, without knowing that there is something that can change their perspective towards smartphones. Something that will change their point of view about the real definition of 'smartphones'. It is an idea of Billy May, a newly introduced concept, and it is called MOZILLA SEABIRD. Though it is just a concept, it is totally unbeatable.

The Mozilla Seabird, part of the Concept Series project by Mozilla Labs, is an experiment in how consumers ( or users ) might interact with their mobile content as devices and technology advances. Drawing on insights culled from the Mozilla community, a focus quickly developed around a user-friendly physical interaction.

The Seabird, then, introduces a few possibilities into how user interaction might evolve with the advancing motion capture and projector driven innovation in the market. First out, the Seabird imagines how a multiple use dongle might augment the crowded gestural interface with greater precision and direct manipulation of content in 3D space.

With mobile phone companies such as Samsung, LG and Motorola moving towards display applications for projectors, the technology remains open for expanding user interaction and input at the same time. The Seabird, on just a flat surface, enables netbook-quality interaction by working with the projector’s angular distortion to deliver interface, rather than content. With the benefit of a dock, each projector works independently and delivers laptop levels of efficiency.

The form development took its cues from various aerodynamic, avian and decidedly feminine forms. Its erect posture intends a sense of poise while its supine conformity to the hand reconciles that with the user’s desire for digital control. The curvature of the back also serves a functional role in elevating the projector lens elements when lying flat.

Eventhough the idea is so innovative, Mozilla is just experimenting with the new ideas and Mozilla has no plan of producing such phones.  This is actually just a visiom on what an Open Web mobile phone could look like, and therefore, Mozilla will not be having any further plan to make this Seabird a reality.
